SUMMARY:Reconceptualizing Blackness
DESCRIPTION:A Youth Call to Action\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite youth of all races and spiritual traditions to apply to attend The Wilmette Institute’s first anti-racism week for youth focusing on the Black experience. This session is intended for youth of all backgrounds who are active or interested in racial justice with regards to any ethnic or racial community. We believe everyone needs to be informed about Blackness\, so we can work together toward a unified society.  \n\n\n\nGreen Acre is providing the venue for the week. Space is limited\, and interested youth should fill out the application linked to at the bottom of this page. \n\n\n\nWe will foster a consultative atmosphere where youth can learn from each other\, make friends with their peers working in the field of racial justice\, and benefit from the wisdom and expertise of experienced presenters and faculty. We seek to inspire\, educate\, and learn from the next generation of racial justice protagonists. We will explore “the concepts and approaches for social transformation developed in the current series of Plans that can be utilized to promote race unity in the context of community building\, social action\, and involvement in the discourses of society” (Universal House of Justice\, July 22\, 2020). \n\n\n\nThis camp is intended for students in high school\, ages 14-18. \n\n\n\nCamp will begin on Monday evening\, July 25th\, and run through Saturday afternoon\, July 30th. \n\n\n\nTuition is $540(If you think you might need a scholarship to attend\, please contact us at green.acre.anti.racism@gmail.com) \n\n\n\nPlanned Topics from the Curriculum:\n\n\n\nAfrican CosmologyPre-colonial African HistorySettler Colonialism and Logics of OppressionBlack History with a Focus on the Contributions of Black AmericansNotable African American WomenRace as a Social ConstructBystander Training for How to Respond When You Witness Racism in Your Daily LifeHow Racism Became Institutionalized in Post-Reconstruction AmericaThe Science of Skin ColorWhat the Bahá’í Writings Say About How to Solve Racism in AmericaInteractive WorkshopsActivism Using the Arts\n\n\n\nOur faculty includes Dr. Joy DeGruy\, Kamal Sinclair\, Masud Olufani\, Jeanais Brodie\, and Justin de Leon\, among others. \n\n\n\nThis class is provided by the Wilmette Institute and hosted on Green Acre’s campus. The Bahá’í inspired curriculum explores strategies for solving America’s ongoing racial problems. Attendees will participate in devotional programs and discuss spiritual perspectives. \n\n\n\nBahá’ís seek to work with all members of the community to solve humanity’s social ills. We do not proselytize or require adherence or allegiance to Bahá’í teachings or modes of thought. This session welcomes youth of all stripes who want to work on “America’s most challenging issue\,” achieving racial justice. \n\n\n\nOne of our goals for youth camp is to record the lectures\, Q&A sessions\, and some discussion sections for later use in an online version. Final edited videos will be posted publicly online. Video cameras will be present\, and a photo release will be requested from youth participants and their parents/guardians. \n\n\n\nWe encourage all participants to bring a friend or apply in groups. You will be grouped together with those you come with whenever possible. \n\n\n\nInterested youth should fill out the application. THIS IS NOT A REGISTRATION FORM. This is an application\, and we will select only some youth who apply: \n\n\n\n\n\nApplications are reviewed in the order received. \n\n\n\nPreference will be given to youth who are active in racial justice\, to Black youth\, to youth attending in pairs or groups\, and to youth who live near Green Acre. \n\n\n\nCOVID Disclaimer: This event is dependent upon the continued permissive COVID-19 status in Eliot\, Maine. If public health officials or the Bahá’í administration advise we cancel or delay camp due to a peak in cases or a new variant\, then we will do so. \n\n\n\nChaperones:  We are looking for young adults to serve as chaperones. Chaperones are not charged tuition and are welcome and encouraged to attend the programming. We are especially looking for chaperones who are active in racial justice\, who are serving as youth animators\, and/or who are Black or BIPOC. If you are interested in serving as a chaperone\, please email us!   \n\n\n\nYou can reach us at green.acre.anti.racism@gmail.com

SUMMARY:‘Abdu'l-Bahá’s Solution to the Global Food Crisis: Begin with the Village | Paul Hanley
DESCRIPTION:Green Acre and the Bahá’í Publishing Trust welcome you to a special edition of Conversations of the Heart honoring ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s historic visit to Green Acre in August of 1912\, with a series of online talks given by authors covering issues of the day from a Bahá’í perspective. \n\n\n\nThroughout the world\, food security is threatened by social inequality and environmental pressures. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá’s extensive discourse on agriculture\, food\, and rural development\, and His practical efforts to create alternative approaches to rural development\, offer a systems approach to contemporary problems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Hanley\n\n\n\nAlthough I was raised in a city\, I became fascinated with agriculture as a youth and decided to “drop out” and become a smallholder farmer in Saskatchewan\, Canada where I grew up. I helped form the first community land trust in Canada and lived on a self-sufficient\, off grid farm for 10 years. During this time I became engaged in the Earthcare Group\, a movement to promote organic gardening and farming and started to teach organic gardening classes for the University of Regina in 1975. I participated in the committee that organized a series of six groundbreaking conferences on organic farming involving producers and government and university experts. I edited and co-wrote Earthcare–Ecological Agriculture in Saskatchewan\, published in 1980\, a guide to organic farming in the prairie region. These activities contributed to the formation of a substantial organic farming industry in Saskatchewan and Canada in the 1980s and onward. \n\n\n\nI have published five books and 1600 articles on the environment\, sustainable development\, agriculture\, and other topics.  I was environment columnist with the Saskatoon StarPhoenix from 1989 to 2016. \n\n\n\nI am a recipient of the Canadian Environment Award\, the Meewasin Conservation Award\, the Organic Connections Pioneer Organic Communicator Award\, and the Saskatchewan Sustainability Award from the Regional Centre of Excellence for Education on Sustainable Development. My book ELEVEN (2014) received the 2015 University of Saskatchewan President’s Award for Non-fiction and the 2015 ABS North America Award for Distinguished Scholarship. My biography Man of the Trees: Richard St. Barbe Baker\, the First Global Conservationist (University of Regina Press 2018)\, features a foreword by HRH Prince Charles and introduction by Jane Goodall.

Keep coming back to the web site as we release more of the artist’s video statements about their work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Panel Discussion\n\n\n\nAn evening with a panel of three artists who offered their insights and inspiration around the theme of the “Pupil of the Eye” art show. Hear how they view the importance of the arts in their lives and as an avenue into deeper social change and racial harmony. \n\n\n\nThou art dark in countenance and bright in character. Thou art like unto the pupil of the eye which is dark in color\, yet it is the fount of light and the revealer of the contingent world. —Selections From the Writings of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá\n\n\n\nBahá’u’lláh once compared the colored people to the black pupil of the eye surrounded by the white. In this black pupil is seen the reflection of that which is before it\, and through it the light of the spirit shineth forth. —‘Abdu’l-Bahá quoted in The Advent of Divine Justice\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Panelists\n\n\n\n\n\nArya BadiyanI am a creator employing a portfolio of modalities\, often several at once\, including painting\, creative writing\, poetry and enterprise. SUMMARY:Conversations around the Pupil of the Eye Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Artist Panel Discussion\n\n\n\nCome dialogue with them and discover in-depth insights into their understanding of the quote\, “Thou art like unto the pupil of the eye which is dark in color\, yet it is the fount of light and the revealer of the contingent world.” —‘Abdu’l-Bahá. \n\n\n\nThis evening’s panel is made up of the “Participating Artists” that have taken the time to ponder and create artwork for this show. This will be an exhilarating evening with a panel of four artists who will be offering conversations around the arts in line with the theme for this art show\, with plenty of time for dialogue and questions. Also hear how they view the importance of the arts in their lives and as an avenue into deeper social change and racial harmony. \n\n\n\nThe Panelists\n\n\n\nHelen ButlerI love process\, watching how the germ of an idea unfolds. There is mystery; there is faith; there is trust. This shape-shifting dimension is abundant throughout creation but most welcomed in the arts. \n\n\n\nInger Elizabeth GregoryInger is a former public school art educator and artist. Born in Stavanger\, Norway\, her family immigrated to America. Continuously moving from state to state\, she found joy and comfort in drawing. She considers herself a lifelong learner and Art advocate. \n\n\n\nGordon ArzuGordon started working with the Green Acre Art Committee with the art show “Afrofuturism” over a year ago and has been a contributing artist to the effort put forth to bring discourse through the arts around social change. Below are some comments from Gordon on the current show “Pupil of the Eye” which Mr. Arzu has contributed to. \n\n\n\n“The pupil filters and regulates light as it travels through the eye making it possible for our brain to see and make sense of our reality. One can say that through the collective experience of people of African descent we too as humans can see\, reflect and try to understand the reality of our society.” \n\n\n\nE. C. PhillipsA graduate of the Arts Institute of Pittsburgh\, PA with an Associated Degree in Specialized Advertising. Ed has been passionate about the arts ever since he started drawing cartoons from the Sunday paper at 9 years of age. In 2009 Ed worked for 7 years as an Executive Director for the Phelps Art Center in Phelps\, NY. This experience helped to expand his understanding of the business of Art. With that experience and his education\, life training and acquired knowledge he is continuing to carry a passion for the arts into creating art with a deeper and more profound expression. Ed now says “Art is in his heArt!”
