It delves into what it is like to build a relationship with the ground we walk on\, the things we pass by\, and the resources we rely on\, all through a human-centric lens. This experience goes beyond mere observation; it encourages you to engage\, interact\, and connect with the Earth. Together\, we cultivate this relationship\, creating “Our Earth-ship.” \n\n\n\nPerformance Dates & Tickets\n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 30 | 2pm & 7pm | Tickets\n\n\n\nSunday\, May 31 | 2pm & 7pm | Tickets\n\n\n\nDue to the immersive\, interactive nature of the program each performance will be limited to 35 persons. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenerously sponsored by \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More About Djeff Jean-Phillippe\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDjeff Jean-Philippe is a highly accomplished artist renowned as a leading Hip Hop and street-dance educator\, dancer\, and choreographer in New England. Originally hailing from Montreal\, Quebec\, he lived in northern Massachusetts around Boston and Lowell until he recently moved back to Montreal for recent projects. DJeff’s profound passion for dance blossomed through extensive training under distinguished figures in street-dance culture\, including Jamar Hopkins and Brian “Footwork” Green. His expertise spans a wide range of dance forms\, encompassing hip-hop\, dancehall\, breaking\, Chicago footwork\, house\, popping\, locking\, whacking\, voguing\, Afro-house\, Afrobeat\, Krump\, and various Latin dances. Notably\, he has also received training in ballet and contemporary dance under Judith Koeckhoven. Djeff’s dynamic and high-energy classes are dedicated to upholding fundamental principles while integrating contemporary and modern elements\, exemplified by his coined term “Temphopical\,” signifying the fusion of contemporary hip-hop. Additionally\, Jeff is a pioneering researcher developing a novel Afro-Latin dance form called Kimpada\, which merges Kizomba\, Kompa\, Bachata\, and Zouk. As the founder and director of The Expressive Movement\, a company focusing on hip-hop\, contemporary\, and modern dance\, DJeff led tours across the East Coast\, Canada\, and internationally from 2018 to 2019. Beyond his artistic endeavors\, Jeff is a dedicated educator and advocate for social causes. His work extends to fostering innovative approaches to human interaction through dance\, both within and beyond the realm of performing arts. \n\n\n\nDJeff is a dedicated and accomplished artist who recently finished his MFA degree at Bennington College\, with publication of his first book: The Relationship As Dance. His passion for dance and holistic wellness has led him to share his knowledge and expertise with the world. Through his extensive experience in the performing arts\, including appearances on TV shows\, commercials\, musicals\, as well as collaborations and working alongside renowned artists such as Joyner Lucas and Mr. Vegas to name a few\, DJeff has made a significant impact in the world of art and Afro-diasporic lineage. \n\n\n\nIn addition to his artistic pursuits\, DJeff has recently embraced an exhilarating new side passion into one of his main artistic focuses: Music-Engineer/DJing. As a talented dancer and musician\, he possesses a profound love and intuitive understanding of music\, enabling him to craft transformative spaces where people can embark on journeys of movement and emotion or simply be fully present. This is why he proudly goes by the name DJ Chef Jeff\, embodying the practice of juxtaposition and essence of Caribbean meals.” He masterfully blends\, and breaks down sounds using a mic\, a mix\, a track\, or even a simple beat\, as he “cooks” and creates a feeling that’ll leave a captivating taste in the body\, ears and mouth for the audiences that experience his practice. In a remarkably short time\, DJeff has already left his musical mark in vibrant locations like San Francisco\, Oakland\, Boston\, France\, and Brazil. He is swiftly establishing himself as a nationally and internationally renowned DJ\, lighting up events such as dance battles\, DJ Boil Rooms\, Chill rooms\, and dynamic DJ sessions. \n\n\n\nDJeff is committed to improving communities by curating artistic events of many forms\, building programs\, and promoting racial equity and justice\, as well as human consciousness. He has served as a keynote speaker at numerous seminars and conferences\, addressing important topics such as “Bridge The Racial Gap” and “The Divine Masculine & Feminine.” \n\n\n\nDjeff’s dedication to guiding and mentoring the health and wellness of all individuals is evident in his establishment of “Our Space\,” a holistic and multicultural arts center that he opened in 2021. Through this endeavor\, DJeff aims to create a positive and inclusive environment where he can continue to inspire and empower others. His ongoing efforts reflect his deep commitment to creating a fair and productive world for all.

SUMMARY:Resonant Listening
DESCRIPTION:Resonance in a conversation arises when we have a sense that the other person really heard us and is “with us.” It’s fundamental to creating connection\, trust\, and thinking well together. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, you will learn specific methods for how to listen in a way that generates resonance. You’ll have opportunities to practice with other participants as you help people work through current challenges. We’ll talk about how these listening approaches can be used by facilitators. \n\n\n\nBeth Tener is offering this workshop as part of the monthly Facilitation Lab series of events\, held in Portsmouth\, NH. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Facilitation Lab Portsmouth \n\n\n\nFacilitation Lab Portsmouth is a monthly in-person meetup for changemakers\, collaborative leaders\, and facilitators across Portsmouth. Our purpose is to foster learning by doing in a psychologically safe environment\, building a strong and supportive community of peers across the region. I’ll be partnering with the Regional Lead\, Devon Skerrit who cultivates a space for experimentation and collaborative leadership development\, with a focus on people-powered organizational change. Facilitation Lab Portsmouth is a global network of regions\, including other virtual meetups organized by continent and in-person meetups organized by cities. It’s time to up our game and build capacity to change this pattern. The place to start is to bring in the power of peer support\, i.e.\, people not in the conflict who can help you work through it.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED | qUaRtEr LiFe cRy SiS
DESCRIPTION:This performance has been postponed. We will be rescheduling for the Fall. Stay tuned.\n\n\n\nAs part of a series produced by Theater for the People\, we are hosting Miranda Lawson’s qUaRtEr LiFe cRy SiS\, a dance-comedy mashup that dives straight into the delightful disaster of your 20s. The movement blends contemporary technique with Hip Hop influences\, flipping between sharp musicality and unhinged physical storytelling like your brain does at 3 a.m. The story follows one twenty-something’s slow-motion ego death — falling apart\, laughing through the mess\, and being forced to face the mental-health stuff she’d absolutely rather not. It’s real\, raw\, and ridiculous—in other words\, everything your twenties promised to be. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMIRANDA LAWSON: \n\n\n\nMiranda Lawson (she/her) is a performer\, choreographer and educator based in the Greater Boston area. She received her BA in Dance and Psychology from Mount Holyoke College in 2022\, where she was recognized with awards in choreographic excellence and leadership through social justice work. She has performed in works by Stefanie Batten Bland\, Shura Baryshnikov\, Betsi Graves\, Chloe London\, and Jenna Riegel. She is currently a company dancer with Urbanity Dance\, in addition to making and performing in her own choreography. Her own work has been presented at the School for Contemporary Dance and Thought (Northampton MA)\, the Multicultural Arts Center (Cambridge MA)\, Tufts University (Medford MA)\, and The American College Dance Association Conference (Middlebury VT). Miranda was a mentee of MIDDAY Movement’s BIPOC Professional Dancer Mentorship program from 2022-23\, an Urbanity X resident in 2022\, and the recipient of Mass Cultural Council’s Pandemic Relief Grant and the Somerville Artists Fellowship both in 2023. \n\n\n\nCONTENT WARNING: This show touches on real experiences with mental health\, substance use\, and suicidal thoughts. Please only engage with this work in ways that feel comfortable and safe. Not recommended for children.

SUMMARY:Pre-Registration | Family Program 2 | August 2026
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Pre-Registration for Summer School | Family Program 2 which will be held August 19 – 23rd. This program is designed to assist families make a unique contribution to the community building process developing at the local level through the lens of the March 19\, 2025 message from the Universal House of Justice. Learn more here. \n\n\n\nFor this program\, first priority will be given to residents of the Northeastern States\, and then those who haven’t attended Green Acre family programs previously or recently. Since these programs depend on volunteers to assist with the kitchen and in hospitality\, as well as teaching children’s classes\, those serving in this way will also be given priority. \n\n\n\nBecause of the high demand for these programs\, we are continuing with a multi-step registration process. The first step is pre-registration which allows families to indicate their interest in attending the program. This is then followed by three rounds of invitations where families will be invited to formally register for the program. For those who don’t receive an invitation in the first round\, they will automatically be placed on the waiting list. The same process will follow with the second and third rounds of invitations to formally register. \n\n\n\nThe multi-step process will be as follows: \n\n\n\n\nPre-Registration\n\nOn Wednesday\, April 1 at 9:00 AM\, Eastern Time\, we will open our Pre-Registration form.\n\n\n\nThis simplified form will ask for only basic information for each family and is an indicator of interest in attending. Filling out this initial form does not mean one has registered for the program.\n\n\n\nFor this program\, first priority will be given to residents of the Northeastern States\, and then those who haven’t attended Green Acre family programs previously or recently. Since these programs depend on volunteers to assist with the kitchen and in hospitality\, as well as teaching children’s classes\, those serving in this way will also be given priority. Because of this prioritization\, this is not a first come\, first served process.\n\n\n\nPre-registration Link (live at 9:00 AM\, April 1)\n\n\n\n\n\nInvitation to Formal Registration\n\nAfter the initial Pre-Registration period\, for those invited to the program\, we will send a separate link to formally invite you to register and you will have three days to register.\n\n\n\nWe will do series of rounds of invitations beginning on April 15th and lasting approximately six weeks.\n\n\n\nFor those who don’t receive an invitation in the first round\, they will automatically be placed on the waiting list and the same process will follow with the additional rounds.\n\n\n\nPlease be sure not to make any travel arrangements until you have formally registered.

DESCRIPTION:An invitation to Artists\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite you to use your artistic expression\, whether in painting\, photography\, sculpture\, poetry\, music\, dance\, live performance and other forms – to explore these questions and spark meaningful conversations and creations related to the theme of Migration: \n\n\n\n\nWhat does it feel like to be truly welcomed in a new place\, or to offer that welcome to someone else?\n\n\n\n\n\nHow does your own family or personal story of movement\, chosen or forced — across land\, identity\, or time — connect to the larger story of human migration?\n\n\n\n\n\nIn what ways can the beauty of cultural diversity reveal our deeper spiritual oneness? How might contrasting elements — color\, texture\, form\, or sound — express harmony?\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do borders\, seen or unseen\, shape our sense of belonging or exclusion?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat does it mean not only to be welcomed\, but to reclaim voice\, culture\, and dignity in a new place? How might your art illuminate this transformation?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat stories\, textures\, and memories do displaced people bring that enrich the collective identity of any nation?\n\n\n\n\n\nOf course\, your creative process need not be limited to these questions.\n\n\n\n\n\nHave an idea for a live show or discourse space? Write us at art@greenacre.org\n\n\n\n\nImportant Dates\n\n\n\n\nOn-line call to discuss the Artist Call and themes (optional): Wednesday\, January 7th\, 2026 | 7pm\n\n\n\nSubmit art for review by Monday\, March 23rd\, 2026 | Midnight.\n\n\n\nThe curating team will review submissions and respond to artists by March 30th\, 2026\n\n\n\nFinal electronic file or physical piece(s) to be received at Green Acre by April 13th\, 2026\n\n\n\nThe show will open May 2nd\, 2026\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This show is very personal to me. The world’s problems can seem overwhelming or too big. But this call is a powerful directive for all of us as individuals. It means the world when someone makes me feel like I belong\, especially when it comes from someone of the culture of that country.” \n\n\n\n– Gordon Arzu (Contributing artist and immigrant from Honduras) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMigration\n\n\n\nA Journey Towards Oneness\n\n\n\nArtist Call\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOurs is a migratory species\,…Indeed\, almost everyone can find a story of migration in their family history. Rather than a problem to be solved\, this perspective emphasizes that migration is the means by which human beings throughout history have solved their problems\, explored the world and improved their lives. \n– Mohsin Hamid\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Innate Nobility of all\n\n\n\nIn our previous show\, Created Noble\, we asked artists to explore the concept of the innate nobility of every person. To view humanity as one human family vs. “in” and “out” groups\, is conducive to building the world anew. Envision a world where everyone feels of value regardless of race\, creed\, culture\, sex or status. SUMMARY:Chitra
DESCRIPTION:Chitra (meaning “portrait”) is an evening-length Kathak solo with Ariaki Dandawate that presents distinct vignettes of the form’s rhythmic precision and expressive range. Through traditional compositions\, the work highlights how Kathak’s unique technique and storytelling complement each other\, from intricate footwork and complex rhythmic structures to nuanced expression. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of Chitra is Kathak’s dynamic relationship with its audience. Through spoken rhythmic syllables and interactive exchange the performance transforms rhythm into imagery: painting moments drawn from everyday life and the natural world. Humor\, playfulness\, tenderness\, and intensity emerge side by side\, offering a richly textured experience. \n\n\n\nEngaging and immediate\, Chitra presents Kathak as an art form driven by rhythm and human connection — one that speaks across backgrounds and invites audiences into a shared space of feeling\, imagination\, and discovery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAriaki Dandawate is a Kathak artist\, teacher and performer based in the Greater Boston and New York Metropolitan Areas. She has trained for over 20 years under Archana Joglekar and holds a Master’s degree in Kathak. As an emerging solo performer and choreographer\, Ariaki’s work aims to contextualize her practice for uninitiated audiences\, thereby emphasizing the cultural relevance of traditional Kathak practices on the contemporary stage. Her process is informed by her experiences as a 1st generation-American who shares a deep connection to her Indian heritage\, and who has spent decades honing her craft under a cultural backdrop foreign to Kathak. \n\n\n\nTo that end\, Ariaki’s diverse artistic career spanning performance\, education and choreography has allowed her to further her outreach as an artist. She has performed immersive solo performances within North America and abroad at the Battery Dance Festival\, Rubin Museum (NYC)\, Ursuline Arts Center (Kentucky)\, Aki Studio (Toronto)\, Multicultural Arts Center (Boston)\, David and Dorothea Garfield Theater (San Diego)\, to name a few. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, Ariaki was commissioned to create and present collaborative work on several occasions at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (NY)\, Multicultural Arts Center (Boston)\, and Arts At the Armory (Boston). \n\n\n\nIn addition to her work as a performer\, Ariaki has served as a cultural consultant on projects like the Asian American Ballet Project (Boston)’s reimagination of “La Bayadere”. She was invited as a guest lecturer on “Storytelling in Kathak” for the Ohio State University’s Theater Department. At present\, she is a 2026 Lotus Fellow with Arts India US\, where she is developing original work that challenges the boundaries and contexts of Kathak presentation. \n\n\n\nIn addition to Kathak\, Ariaki has been training in Odissi with Guru Bijayini Satpathy since 2019 through virtual\, in-person\, and residential intensive formats. With a unique blend of tradition and innovation\, Ariaki’s performances and workshops aim to bring the rich cultural heritage of Kathak to a wider audience. Through creative choreography and immersive storytelling\, Ariaki’s work transcends boundaries and captivates audiences of all ages.

SUMMARY:Relational Intelligence Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Human interaction is the key force in overcoming resistance and speeding change.” – Atul Guwande  \n\n\n\n\nIn a fast-changing world\, we need ways to galvanize the best thinking of a group. With the right conditions\, a group can hold levels of complexity far greater than one individual. Groups can be co-intelligent\, that is wiser together. Though groups can also be “co-stupid” – shutting down people’s best thinking and expression. \n\n\n\nThis workshop offers an innovative suite of methods and experiences to tap relational intelligence – the ability of a group of people to listen and connect their different perspectives to generate something ‘emergent’ and new from the combination. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, you’ll learn group listening and peer support practices that open up space for expression. People bring a current challenge or threshold they’re dealing with and practice a variety of approaches to gain new clarity on the situation. You’ll learn: \n\n\n\n\nThe art of resonant listening – specific ways to listen so that people feel deeply heard\, supported\, and they unravel the nuances of a situation\n\n\n\nPractical tools for peer support to work within complexity and see fresh possibilities\n\n\n\nA process called constellations that helps us see the larger web of relationships in a situation in a way that can unlock stuck patterns and reveal wise paths forward\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is for: \n\n\n\nSocial changemakers\, facilitators\, business and non-profit leaders\, community builders\, and artists who want to enhance how they work with people and groups to activate the best thinking and forward movement. \n\n\n\nThe workshop is facilitated by Beth Tener and is held at Green Acre in Eliot\, Maine. Green Acre was founded in 1894 and has hosted conferences and gatherings for over 100 years on subjects related to unity\, social action\, and building community. \n\n\n\nThis workshop continues the spirit of the SeaCHANGE Conference\, a participatory conference\, which weaves conversations\, community\, and creativity to explore timely questions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuotes from Previous Participants \n\n\n\n“I continue to process the time we had together – which had a fairly profound and deeply grounding impact on how I was thinking about my next professional step. The path became much clearer in the 24 hours after our gathering.” \n\n\n\n“The resonant listening practice is such an important skill that you can take into any part of your life – in work\, personal relationships\, and with yourself.”   \n\n\n\n“The constellation experience was really helpful. It was a different pathway to get answers. A room full of people could sense things in a way the person alone couldn’t.”   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe fee for the workshop is $150. Lunch is included. \n\n\n\nPlease contact Beth if cost is a barrier to participating and we can offer discounts to ensure you can participate. \n\n\n\nIf you can’t make this workshop and would like to learn of future events\, click here to join the newsletter.

Write us at art@greenacre.org\n\n\n\n\nImportant Dates\n\n\n\n\nOn-line call to discuss the Artist Call and themes (optional): Wednesday\, January 7th\, 2026 | 7pm\n\n\n\nSubmit art for review by Monday\, March 23rd\, 2026 | Midnight.\n\n\n\nThe curating team will review submissions and respond to artists by March 30th\, 2026\n\n\n\nFinal electronic file or physical piece(s) to be received at Green Acre by April 13th\, 2026\n\n\n\nThe show will open May 2nd\, 2026\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“This show is very personal to me. Imagine the love\, compassion\, empathy\, beauty and justice that would thrive in such a society. \n\n\n\nEveryone seeks justice\, love and safety\n\n\n\nPeople leave their homelands for many reasons—quality of life\, systemic poverty\, conflict\, persecution\, displacement\, environmental collapse\, and the failures of governance. SUMMARY:Winter School 2025
DESCRIPTION:Winter School 2025 | December 26th through December 30th. \n\n\n\nThis year’s Winter School will continue to explore building new patterns of family life using the March 19\, 2025 message from the Universal House of Justice. The letter and its themes will be explored with all age levels and classes. This is a highly interactive and participatory program. Because it is designed for the whole family\, attendance of all members of the family is expected including all the adult participants.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The nature of the flourishing communities that the Bahá’í world is striving to raise has profound implications for the family. It is within the family that the individual is born and nurtured\, and within the family that individuals begin to learn how to live together with others. The family unit is the basic building block of community\, and beyond\, of the entire social order.” \n\n\n\n\n\n“Learning about a new pattern of family life is\, therefore\, an integral part of the effort to learn about the release of the society-building power of the Faith.” \n\n\n\n– March 19\, 2025 letter from the Universal House of Justice \n\n\n\n\nBecause of the high demand for these programs\, there is a multi-step registration process. SUMMARY:Relational Intelligence Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In a world that presses us to move fast and isolate from each other\, this workshop is about how to slow down\, connect\, and discover powerful ways that a group can think well together. \n\n\n\nLike this sculpture\, the world offers far more than Either/Or choices\, yet we need more people to help us wrestle with our narrow perspective and see the new doors opening with the current ones are closing. Getting to the depths is where we have a chance of uprooting the patterns that keep us stuck and find the wisest creative responses. \n\n\n\nInstead of artificial intelligence\, we can tap relational intelligence – the ability of a group of people to listen and connect their different perspectives to generate something ‘emergent’ and new from the combination. With the right conditions\, a group can hold levels of complexity that might overwhelm an individual trying to cope alone. \n\n\n\n\n“Human interaction is the key force in overcoming resistance and speeding change.” – Atul Guwande  \n\n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, you’ll learn group listening and peer support practices that open up space for expression. A room full of people could sense things in a way the person alone couldn’t.”   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe fee for the workshop is $150. Please contact Beth if cost is a barrier to participating and we can offer discounts to ensure you can participate.

SUMMARY:WASTE LAND | Film & Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Doors open for gallery viewing: 5:30 PMFilm begins at 6:00 PM \n\n\n\nPart of our Created Noble: Worthy by Design art theme where we have been exploring the inherent nobility of each person\, this powerful film helps us expore this vital theme throguh unique lens. Filmed over nearly three years\, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump\, Jardim Gramacho\, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores” — self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However\, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND\, BLINDSIGHT and COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and\, in the end\, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. \n\n\n\nYou’ll also have an opportunity to tour the art show: Created Noble: Worthy by Design which explores how we honor the inherent human dignity of every person ad move beyond prejudice and distrust. \n\n\n\nThis event is free. Registration is encouraged but not required. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/sNlwh8vT2NU?si=WkeezjguHVyKApTh\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDIRECTOR’S STATEMENT\n\n\n\nI have always been interested in garbage: What it says about us. What in there embarrasses us\, and what we can’t bear to part with. Where it goes and how much of it there is. How it endures. What it might be like to work with it every day. I read about one woman’s crusade to show her appreciation for all the sanitation workers in New York by hugging each of them\, and I applauded the sentiment … and yet … there had to be some other way for me to show my appreciation. \n\n\n\nThen when I was a graduate film student at NYU\, I started training with the NYU Triathlon Club. As we endured the most grueling 6:00 a.m. workouts imaginable\, I bonded with fellow triathlete Robin Nagle\, a brilliant professor who was teaching about garbage. Listening to Robin talk about her work was so fascinating that I began sitting in on her PhD seminar\, and loved deepening my thinking about the sociology and implications and revelations and actuality of garbage. \n\n\n\nSo when Robin took her grad students to visit Fresh Kills\, the landfill on Staten Island\, I was curious and gatecrashed. These days it is best known as the resting place of the debris from the World Trade Center\, but this was back in March 2000. It was a shocking place\, with chainlink fences clad with teeming nightmare quantities of plastic bags making the nastiest noise imaginable\, and pipes outgassing methane poking up at regular intervals through the exaggerated contours of the grassedover giant mounds of garbage. It’s a parody of an idyllic hyper-landscaped city park\, with garbage hills 225’ high – taller than the Statue of Liberty. We looked at the rats and seagulls and dogs\, and at the palimpsests of layer upon layer of discarded possessions. And we tried to ignore the putrid smell. \n\n\n\nI love great locations in movies\, and I couldn’t believe I’d never seen a landfill on-screen before. It was the most haunting place. And all of the garbage I’d ever generated living in New York City was in there somewhere. This was the graveyard of all my stuff. Along with everyone else’s. I immediately knew that I wanted to make a movie in a garbage dump. \n\n\n\nCut to 2006\, and I met producer Angus Aynsley and co-producer Peter Martin at BritDoc and again at the London Film Festival\, and instantly liked them enormously and wanted to work with them. Talking about possible projects\, Angus mentioned that he had met Vik Muniz and been impressed by his highly entertaining slideshow about art history and the social projects he was working on. Angus and Peter were already working on a short film on Vik but realised there was potential for something bigger. I had seen and loved Vik’s work\, and I was hugely excited about the possibility of working with him. So I read some of Vik’s writing and set off with Angus and Peter to meet Vik in Newcastle\, England when he had an opening at the Baltic in January 2007. \n\n\n\nWhen we met up again in Vik’s studio in New York two months later the conversation turned to garbage\, and I suddenly thought about my trip to Fresh Kills seven years previously. That was the lightbulb moment. Vik had previously done a beautiful series using junk\, and he had also done projects with street sweepings and dust. His creative use of materials is his signature — whether chocolate sauce\, sugar\, or condensation trails from planes — so this project would very much be an extension of his earlier work. After we’d started talking about it\, no other ideas were interesting anymore. I knew that a collaboration between Vik and the catadores would be potentially very dramatic. Vik had previously done some brilliant social projects with street kids in Sao Paolo and had a wonderful ongoing project in Rio which employed kids from the favelas\, and I was totally inspired by him. \n\n\n\nA month later\, Angus and I got exciting news that Fabio had found one landfill where the drug traffic was under control\, and the catadores were being organized into a co-operative by a charismatic young leader who might be open to collaborating with Vik. We were all very nervous — there were so many things to be afraid of\, from dengue fever to kidnapping — but we all wanted to go. We arrived in Rio de Janeiro in August 2007 — Vik\, Angus\, Peter and me. Seeing the extremes of poverty and wealth so ostentatiously displayed through the car window … the contrasts of mountains and oceans\, black and white\, garbage and art\, art stars and catadores … the contrasts couldn’t be more starkly drawn than in Rio de Janeiro\, and I realized that it wasn’t a coincidence that we were tackling this particular topic in Rio. It was perfect. \n\n\n\nFor me this film\, as with all of my work\, is about getting to know people who you do not normally meet in your life. And\, if I’m doing my job\, I aim to create an opportunity for the audience to feel they are getting under the skin\, to emotionally connect with the people on the screen. But you need people you can care about. And so when Valter first cycled into my line of sight\, I knew for sure that we had a movie. That day I had gone on my first recce to the landfill and was dressed head-to-toe in protective layers fit for a moon landing. His bike was decorated so creatively with odd trinkets from the trash and he honked his eagle horn with such sweet wit that I was totally smitten. \n\n\n\nI am Vik’s biggest fan. And this idea of “the human factor\,” about scales in portraiture\, and distances in getting to know people\, is what the movie is about for me. I’m not sure anyone will notice this unless I tell them\, but there are three references to ants in the movie: Vik says that when he is flying over Gramacho\, the people look like “just little ants\, doing what they do every day”; then Isis talks about the ant that she saw crawling over her dead son’s face; finally we see Vik playing with an ant with his paintbrush in the studio. That play of being so far away that people are just ants\, with no “human factor” is the opposite experience of being so deeply connected to your son that you will never forget “not the tiniest detail\, not a single single detail\,” not even an ant on his face in a single moment. And Vik\, as an artist\, plays between these levels of proximity and distance\, between showing the viewer the material and showing them the idea\, revealing the relationship between the paintstrokes and the scene depicted by the paint. The portrait is Isis\, it is a Picasso\, it is a bunch of garbage\, and it is a work by Vik Muniz – all at once. You can view things close in or further away. Likewise you can fear people from afar or you can go interact with them. I love the Eames’s POWERS OF TEN and I wanted to create a social analog. To start with we see the place from GoogleEarth\, then from a helicopter\, then from a car\, then from a safe distance\, then from a first meeting\, then from a growing friendship\, then from it having changed you fundamentally and permanently. \n\n\n\nJust as Vik wants the portraits to serve as a mirror in which the catadores may see themselves\, so I hope the movie serves as a means for us to see our journey to becoming involved with people so far from ourselves. To zoom all the way in to caring about someone who was previously as far away as it’s possible to be. \n\n\n\nQuestions poke through the fabric of the movie as things get messy. In WASTE LAND Vik and his wife start to argue on-camera about whether the project is hurting the catadores by taking them out of their environment and then\, when it’s over\, expecting them to return. Likewise\, should documentary filmmakers interfere with their subjects’ lives? But how could they not? I don’t believe in objectivity. I observe the observer’s paradox every moment I’m filming. Your presence is changing everything; there’s no mistaking it. And you have a responsibility. \n\n\n\nMy heartfelt thanks to the catadores. I can’t help seeing WASTE LAND as the third in a triptych with my earlier films DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND and BLINDSIGHT\, and not least in the awe and gratitude I feel for the group of people who were courageous enough to share their stories with us — and to live lives so rich in inspiration for us all. We dedicate the movie to Valter\, and remember him saying that 99 is not 100. A single can\, or a single catador\, can make the difference. \n\n\n\n—Lucy Walker\, January 2010

SUMMARY:Pre-Registration | Winter School 2025
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Pre-Registration for Winter School 2025. The program will be held December 26 through the 30th; Pre-Registration begins September 24th. This year’s program is designed to assist families make a unique contribution to the community building process developing at the local level through the lens of the March 19\, 2025 message from the Universal House of Justice. \n\n\n\nThe multi-step process will be as follows: \n\n\n\nThis simplified form will ask for only basic information for each family registering.\n\n\nPlease note: Filling out this initial form does not mean one has registered for Winter School.\n\n\nFor this program\, first priority will be given to residents of the Northeastern States\, and then those who haven’t attended Green Acre family programs previously or recently. Since these programs depend on volunteers to assist with the kitchen and in hospitality\, as well as teaching children’s classes\, those serving in this way will also be given priority. Because of this prioritization\, this is not a first come\, first served process.\n\n\nAfter the initial Pre-Registration period\, for those invited to the program\, we will send a separate link to formally invite you to register and you will have three days to register.\n\n\nWe will do three rounds of invitations beginning on October 1st and continuing to approximately October 31st.\n\n\nIf you haven’t received a formal invitation by then\, you will automatically be placed on the waiting list. Please be sure not to make any travel arrangements until you have formally registered.

SUMMARY:SeaCHANGE CONFERENCE 2025
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to year 4 of SeaCHANGE! A conference like no other. \n\n\n\nWe gather creators of different identities\, races\, and ages. We recognize there are far more stories\, ideas\, and experience in the audience than we could possibly put on a stage. At SeaCHANGE\, we invite the “the audience” to participate. \n\n\n\nThere’s space for conversations on big questions… workshops with amazing artists… an open mic night and dancing… and relaxed time to make genuine human connections and cross-pollinate ideas in a beautiful setting. This year\, we’ll discover answers to this question: \n\n\n\nHow can the arts become a haven for healing\, peace\, dignity\, and community resilience? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay 1 looks at arts as a haven for our personal path. \n\n\n\nDay 2 explores how making or experiencing art creates powerful experience of community—opening hearts\, building collective care\, and restoring dignity. \n\n\n\nDay 3 invites ideas on how to bring this experience back home to seed havens of creative community and new futures. \n\n\n\nThe ripple effects of the community we experience for three days go far beyond the conference: new friendships\, inspiration and ideas\, and collaborations among participants. \n\n\n\nJoin Theater for the People\, Green Acre\, and Kinship on September 12\, 13 & 14 at Green Acre in Eliot\, Maine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo make the most of this extraordinary experience we encourage attendance for the entire event: \n\n\n\nOption 1 | Full Conference | Including overnight | $399 \n\n\n\nIncludes: 3-Day Conference admission | Overnight accommodations (Friday & Saturday) | Meals — Friday lunch through Sunday lunch \n\n\n\nOption 2 | 3-Day Commuter Pass | $225 \n\n\n\nIncludes: 3-Day Conference admission | Meals — Friday lunch through Sunday lunch \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlso\, we do have 1-Day ($80) & 2-Day ($130) passes available which can be selected at check out. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile we do have costs to cover\, we truly want everyone who is excited about the conference to be able to join. We are happy to work out a plan with you to overcome any obstacles. Please reach out the SeaCHANGE team at seachange@greenacre.org to start the conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrevious Year’s Highlights\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTestimonials\n\n\n\n\n\n“I’m a firm believer that the arts can be used for healing and social change. It’s how I survived. It’s how I’ve learned to heal\, and it’s been my life’s mission to help create that space for other people\, especially in places where that space hasn’t been made for them.” —Diannelly Antigua\, Poet Laureate\, Portsmouth\, NH \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“At many conferences\, we are going through the motions. People’s incredible gifts\, truths\, aliveness\, and creative gifts stay dormant because people sit and listen 95% of the time. With SeaCHANGE\, we create a dynamic space where everyone is participating and connecting\, engaged in creative arts and encouraging each other’s expression. I love watching people relax into the space and come alive creatively.” —Beth Tener\, Kinship \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“SeaCHANGE is a space of gathering of different minds\, different communities\, different walks of life. I think that that was a magic that I kept hearing from people who attended. They said “I walked into the space and felt that I belonged and was equal amongst everybody there.” —Victoria Carrington Chavez\, Lilac & Aspen \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“There were so many elements of how we were able to weave the creativity and the gifts of the artists\, and the musicians\, and the dancers here\, and then seeing how the young and the old and people from so many identities and backgrounds came together. It’s so rare to be in that space\, so it really exceeded my expectations.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“It was beautiful to sit\, feel the summer breeze\, look out on the river and have these in-depth conversations and process what we had had learned. Those questions\, guided\, and opened those conversations. I also felt such kinship and connectivity.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I grew up in a creative environment of a black church where the arts are the center… When I moved to the Seacoast\, I saw there was a lot of creativity going on but it felt there was no central place for me to do that as an artist of color. The spirit of SeaCHANGE was making a home and a place like that for people of color\, and providing a space for me where I can be myself and create with people or engage with other artists.” —Najee Brown\, Theater for the People \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the greatest parts of this gift\, the little bit that I’ve been able to be here\, was the diversity of the people\, of different ages and different backgrounds\, but the warmth—the warmth that was felt here the minute and I walked in the door\, and the motivation behind the themes to help one another.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I saw the dance instructors that were going to be leading workshops and I was really looking forward to\, as a disabled person\, some of the benefits and knowledge those people would bring to me through SeaCHANGE conference and I got that.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“SeaCHANGE is rooted in what Green Acre is all about\, which is to be a gathering place where people of all backgrounds\, families\, friends\, and people who want to just work together for peace and justice and the oneness of humanity and the nobility of every human person. It’s an attempt to create a community and ultimately create a society that’s both diverse and united.” —Robert Sapiro\, Green Acre Administrator \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by

SUMMARY:It's Criminal – A Tale of Prison and Privilege
DESCRIPTION:“Deeply moving… Keep your handkerchiefs handy.” —CineSource Magazine \n\n\n\nJoin us for a film showing and dialogue around the film: It’s Criminal\, which offers a vision of how separated communities can learn to speak to each other. Poignant and personal\, the feature documentary shares the life-changing journeys of incarcerated women and Dartmouth College students working together to write and perform an original play that explores the often painful and troubled paths that landed the women behind bars and also shares some of their fragile visions for the future. \n\n\n\nIt’s Criminal also captures how the students and prisoners struggle and ultimately succeed in overcoming their fears and prejudices to form hard won bonds of friendship\, showing that empathy is a powerful force that can help bridge the divide. \n\n\n\nFollowing the film will be a panel with Pati Hernandez of Telling My Story\, who created and co-taught the Dartmouth class documented in the film. Her work is focused on breaking down walls between socially isolated individuals and their communities through collaborative creative engagement. Joining her on the panel will be Debra Hickok of Jericho Circle Project\, an organization that “creates safer prisons and communities by empowering transformational healing for incarcerated individuals and returning citizens on both sides of the prison wall.” \n\n\n\nYou’ll also have an opportunity to tour the art show: Created Noble: Worthy by Design which explores how we honor the inherent human dignity of every person ad move beyond prejudice and distrust. \n\n\n\nDoors open for gallery viewing: 5:30 PMFilm begins at 6:00 PM \n\n\n\nThis event is free. No need to register. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis:\n\n\n\nAdapted from a Recent Review of IT’S CRIMINAL written by Vermont Law School Professor Susan Apel \n\n\n\nIt’s Criminal is a moving and arresting portrait of incarcerated women\, privileged Dartmouth students\, and what happens when they come together to write and stage a play. “It will change you\,” says Professor Ivy Schweitzer to her students\, speaking of the journey upon which her Women and Gender Studies class is about to embark. Our hope is that It’s Criminal will change viewers as well. \n\n\n\nIt’s a documentary that is gorgeously shot by Charlene Music\, in cinema verité style. It tells many stories–stark economic inequality that bleeds over into the current criminal justice system is but one. Imagine the reaction of women prisoners spending a year or more in prison for drug- related crimes when\, in the middle of the making of this film\, a few Dartmouth students are arrested for cocaine possession and the charges all but disappear. Both the women and the students struggle to make sense of this clear sentencing inequity. \n\n\n\nThe film also touches on other themes: the pain and powerlessness of women trying to parent while incarcerated\, the ubiquity of abuse of women and its lasting scars\, the gaze of those on the outside who reduce prisoners to barely two-dimensional cardboard cutouts rather than human beings with thoughts and history. In her dialogues with her students\, Schweitzer poses questions that challenge our understanding of personal responsibility as the only narrative that explains incarceration. She comments also about what happens in jail and asks: what if we used incarceration as a means of helping human beings\, returning them to the outside as healed and better people? \n\n\n\nAnother film theme that resonates deeply is the power of making theater. Pati Hernandez (performer with the renowned Bread and Puppet theater company)\, who co-teaches this course with Schweitzer\, leads the enterprise’s artistic vision\, and she is a force to behold. Drummer\, dancer\, director\, listener\, cajoler\, her interactions are deeply human and authentic as she somehow produces magic. One woman credits Pati and the class with saving her life. Another is more minimalist but no less heartfelt when she says\, “Now I’m a little bit hopeful.” That is no faint praise. \n\n\n\nThe film is not sentimental or easy. The conversations between the students andthe incarcerated women are presented in sometimes stilted fashion as the two groups try to understand each other. “Hated her\,” says one of the women about a Dartmouth student who was wearing a pair of pearl earrings. Another questions whether “we are just an experiment.” The students present their own pain–trying to succeed on a campus where expression of vulnerability is frowned upon. Toward the end of the film\, someone in the play’s audience claims she couldn’t tell the students from the prisoners. “You’re all the same\,” she says. But they’re not. “I’m damaged\,” mourns Malika\, in jail for drug possession. “We are so damn lucky\,” says one of the Dartmouth students\, out loud. \n\n\n\nIt’s Criminal captures the forces tearing our communities and our country apart while offering poignant and personal examples of how it’s possible to overcome the divide. What film could be more important and relevant to our time? \n\n\n\nThe Professors: Ivy Schweitzer is a Professor of English and former Chair of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Dartmouth College. She co-created and co-taught Prisoner\, Women and Performance\, the class documented in It’s Criminal.
