Since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA-Painting 1983), Gary Heise has developed a distinct visual language that bridges Eastern and Western traditions of painting. His practice was deeply influenced by his studies with the Taiwanese painter and printmaker, Liao Shiou-ping, whose mentorship enabled Heise to integrate traditional Chinese techniques and practices (Chinese ink, brushes and paper) into his watercolor compositions.

Heise’s work ranges from intimate local observations to imaginative, semi-abstract landscapes. Now based in Warren, RI, he is an active artist member of the Imago Foundation for theArts. His work is frequently exhibited at the Imago Gallery, Studio Hop (Providence), and the Rhode Island Watercolor Society. Since 2024, Heise has served as the administrative director at the East SideArt Center in Pawtucket, RI, where he also teaches Chinese ink and watercolor techniques, sharing his cross-cultural expertise with the local arts community.

Artist Statement 2026

Drawing on the traditions of Chinese brush painting and Japanese sumi-e, my watercolors emphasize the vitality of the brushstroke and a directness of expression. Central to my practice is the philosophy of ‘self-cultivation,’ where the process of creation itself becomes a journey of mindful expression. I paint in ink and watercolor on Chinese rice papers, depicting scenes of coastal Rhode Island and the rolling hills of the Hudson River Valley, as well as imaginative, semi-abstract land and seascapes. My paintings explore the transient beauty of nature, illustrating how everything—from the fleeting aspects of weather to the ancient rocks beneath our feet—is both alive and ever-changing. I invite the viewer to pause and connect with these precious, shared experiences of nature’s beauty.
