Ujarak Appadoo has been sewing since her childhood, and began her own business, Amautiga, in the fall of 2016 following the birth of her first child. After creating her own amaaruti, Aujaq amaut and ukiuq amaut garments and carriers, she realized that she could also begin to create for other mothers. Ujarak started her academic career in Fine Arts at the University of Ottawa taking studio classes in drawing, sculpture, film and photography before switching programs to focus on the field of Education at McGill University. Appadoo designs or alters many of her own patterns, but much of what she sews, such as the amauti pattern, has been passed down through generations. Originally from Arviat, NU, but now based in Montreal, QC, she sources her materials either from her hometown or from fabric stores in the south. She feels that it is the right moment to deepen her practice by delving into wall tapestries, a form that she has been surrounded by since childhood and now feels she has the skill set to bring to life in a unique way; rooted to traditional forms and yet exploring family and trauma within a contemporary modality.
