Getting Unstuck: Working through Tension and Conflict

Fri 4/10 @ 10:00 am 4:00 pm EDT

The Relational Intelligence workshop series equips groups to thrive in times of transitions – ones you choose and ones you don’t.

How many times have you seen good people trying to do good work that encounter tensions and differences that stall forward progress?

How we respond to the tensions and conflicts that arise in these moments can bring us closer together or separate us.  When people avoid conflict, we end up stuck and far apart. We miss out on the benefits of trust, solidarity, and creative collaboration on shared goals.

The Power of Peer Support

It’s time to up our game and build capacity to change this pattern. The place to start is to bring in the power of peer support, i.e., people not in the conflict who can help you work through it.

In this workshop, you’ll experience how this peer support works. As a group, we’ll learn three practical methods for working through tension and conflict to find understanding, unity, and wise action, including:

  • Transcending “Either/Or” Dynamics – with Polarity Mapping, you’ll discover a simple approach that helps a group balance contradictory needs (such as desire for flexibility vs. consistent rules) and find ‘both/and’ solutions.
  • Listening So People Feel Understood – with Resonant Listening, you’ll learn specific ways to listen so that people feel deeply heard, supported, and they unravel the nuances of a situation.
  • Having Difficult Conversations – with the Ladder of Inference, you’ll find a way to unpack and discuss areas of difference and tension.

We will practice applying these methods with the current challenges of participants. Once you learn these methods, you will find many places to apply them, both at work and in your personal life.

This workshop is for:

Social changemakers, facilitators, business and non-profit leaders, community builders, and artists who want to enhance how they work with people and groups to activate the best thinking and forward movement.

The workshop is facilitated by Beth Tener and is held at Green Acre in Eliot, Maine. Green Acre was founded in 1894 and has hosted conferences and gatherings for over 100 years on subjects related to unity, social action, and building community.

This workshop continues the spirit of the SeaCHANGE Conference, a participatory conference, which weaves conversations, community, and creativity to explore timely questions.

The fee for the workshop is $125. Lunch is included.

Please contact Beth if cost is a barrier to participating and we can offer discounts to ensure you can participate.
